At present the subject is available to the students as Honours , Pass and Elective and Indian Economics subject .
Relevance of the subject:
As long as people depend on money for life, economic will remain an interesting filed to study and explore. Be it international trade, term fiscal plans, or situations of environmental or social crisis, economic study finds its application almost everywhere. Economics and Economic education are important for providing people with valuable insight through learning of effective management of the scarce and finite resources and consequently deriving maximum benefits from them. Not only it educates people with varying levels of financial literacy but also allows them to effectively manage their own finances and even advise others in financial management and planning.
History of the department:
The Department of economics as a royal subject of Arts stream was initiated from the academic session of 1981-82 in Nayagarh Prajamandala Mahila Mahavidyalaya, Nayagarah with the objective of socio-economic upliftment through Education of the then rural women in the backward areas of Nayagarh district. There were traditional B.A. classes from 1984. Students were taking this subject as their Pass subject. Later on it was started +3 degree classes, which is three year course. The department was also imparting education in Rural Industrialization as a compulsory subject to +3 1st year students of Arts stream.
Being a backward district, in correspondence to the students’ demands, this subject has been provided in both English and Odia mediums of instruction, which, in fact, was difficult to some extent but helped them to understand the subject in a better way. In due course of time, the compulsory subject ‘Rural industrialization’ was converted to ‘Population Studies’ and was taught only to +3 final year Arts students. Furthermore, an Honours subject was introduced in the academic session 2010-11 with 16 seats. However, most of the students like to take Economics as their Honours subject instead of pass Economics. Since Nayagarh was not much of an educationally developed district, this institution was specifically targeted for the women higher education. Keeping in mind the financial and academic standards of the students, the faculty members used different methods to teach objective and subjective courses by providing them important study materials. Also innovative methods like academic seminars, teaching though presentations were initiated to make teaching communication easy and convenient. The faculty members used internet and other educational aids for updating their knowledge and teaching skills.
To create self confidence among students so as to cope with the dynamic economy.
To strengthen the decisive power of the students in their lives.
To make the students optimistic, warrior of their better future.
To inculcate the social and moral values so as to enable the students to be good and make others good.
Motto:
To understand/feel/use/extract the best of economics in real life.
Philosophy:
Be optimistic in decision/activity/achievement.
Mission:
To encourage the students to participate more successfully in the increasingly knowledge-based and interdependent global economy of the 21st century.
